Immediately Increase Your Confidence in 6 Steps

By Kristin Hutchings

Confidence can feel like an elusive accomplishment for many of us. We strive to increase our confidence, yet all too often we go about that process in the wrong way. Follow the six steps below and it is guaranteed that your confidence will increase immediately – not just temporarily, but for the long term. The steps may take some initial practice, but the effort is well worth it and you will notice immediate results. Remember that the quality of your life is at stake.

Step 1

We often place too much importance on problems and spend an excessive amount of time worrying about the future. Not only is worry a waste of time but it also zaps away your energy, leaving you less time to spend with your spouse or friends, less time to focus on progressing in your career and less time for improving your confidence levels. There will always be a certain amount of things in our lives that we have no control over, so instead of worrying about everything and anything, focus on what you can control and try to minimise your risks for what you cannot control. That way you will be able to use your energy more constructively.

Step 2

It is natural to feel nervous and apprehensive the first time you try something new. The way around these feelings is to visualize your success. Close your eyes and breathe deeply and imagine your successful outcome. Your mind does not differentiate between something you have imagined and something that is real – so make sure your visualisation is clear. Picture what you are wearing; imagine your confident posture, your happy face, and your strong actions. Imagine the perfect outcome.

Step 3

Find a confidence mentor and study the way they behave and what they say, their beliefs and attitudes. How do you wish to emulate them? If you cannot find a mentor then there are a multitude of self help books available, plus the Internet has a wealth of information on offer. Start to surround yourself with confidence.

Step 4

Start to behave “as if” you are confident. Take on the actions, speech and posture of a confident person, even if you still feel lacking in self-esteem. Acting “as if” is a great way to actually begin to feel confident for real. Acting confident becomes a habit and before long you will discover that your confidence is no longer an act, but a reality.

Step 5

Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. There is the saying that “if you don’t ask, you won’t get” and it’s true. People aren’t mind readers so more often than not you have to ask for what you want. Believe that when you ask for help you will receive it and believe that people like to help others. This belief is empowering as it makes us feel great about ourselves and others too and we will want to reciprocate any help we receive from other people.

Step 6

You need to banish the negative inner chatterbox that is lurking within you. This is the voice that announces you aren’t good enough, clever enough, pretty enough etc, etc. This negative voice alone is enough to damage your goal of increasing your confidence and that’s why it has to be stopped. As soon as you hear a negative statement in your mind, tell it to stop. Be firm. Then pause for a moment and construct a positive statement as a replacement. Do this every time a negative thought appears. You might also want to give your negative inner chatterbox a funny voice that you cannot take seriously – like Donald Duck or Sylvester the Cat for example. Do anything that will take away that negative power. Make fun of the negative voice and then send it packing.
