10 Easy Ways to Live in the Moment

By Kimberly Englot

With lives so busy and multi-tasking considered a desirable trait, it can be hard to live in the moment. Here are 10 really simple ways for you to take 30 seconds, several times a day and be aware of all that is around you.

  1. Take a Deep Breath. You probably don’t realize that you’re breathing shallowly all. Make the effort to take a big, deep breath and you will instantly have to focus your attention on Right Now.
  2. Feel where your feet are. It sounds silly, but just notice where your feet are while you’re walking or standing or sitting. Can you feel your socks and shoes? Literally ground yourself by planting your feet. This is a great technique to help you when you’re feeling anxious or angry, as well as just to get into the moment.
  3. Stretch. Like grounding, stretching will get blood flowing and bring your attention back into your body. When your mind is in the same place and your body (in the chair, not across the country arguing with your mother) you are in the moment.
  4. Look around and See the world. When was the last time you actually paid attention to the things you see every day? Do you notice when something changes in the landscape on your commute to work? Are you aware of the sun rising, or setting, or the changes of the seasons? Pay attention to these moments, and you’ll be astounded by the beauty around you.
  5. Listen to music. Not just for background noise, listening to music that you enjoy can make almost any moment pleasurable. Use music to improve your mood if you’re stuck in traffic. Dance around the house if you need a break.
  6. Smile, genuinely. You get to make someone else feel really great AND improve your own mood. This is a perfect example of when you should “fake-it-til-you-make-it.” A true smile goes a long way.
  7. Give someone a hug. Sometimes you need to let people know how you feel about them. Some people like hugs, some don’t, so make sure it is someone you know quite well. Like the smile, it’s a really small gesture that can improve someones day, make them feel appreciated and make you feel good.
  8. Think a good thought. Or memory, to be exact. Sometimes nothing makes you cherish the present moment, like remembering a good time in the past. Sounds like a paradox, but remembering that life isn’t all bad can really help you connect with the moment, especially if you’re experiencing a down moment in your life.
  9. Do only one thing at a time. Yes, we’re a world of multi-taskers, but this really does take away from your awareness. You cannot do anything well, if you’re trying to do too much at once. It affects your relationships and your productivity. How do you feel when you can tell someone isn’t really listening to you? Doesn’t feel good, so don’t do the same to someone else. Focus on the person in front of you, or the task in front of you. Complete it. Move on.
  10. Write a gratitude list. It might sound cliche, but nothing breeds gratitude like more gratitude. This also works like #8, where you start to realize how great your life is at the moment, even if it isn’t perfect.

Those are just 10 easy things you can do to drastically change your level of happiness and appreciation. Living in the moment can create opportunities for you that you might never had recognized, had you been too wrapped up to see otherwise.

So take a couple minutes out of your day to live in the moment, feel good, and act with intention. Over time you’ll experience huge shifts in your perspectives and in life.   If you want more insight on living in the moment and being happy for no reason, you’ll want to join me for the Happiness & Harmony Makeover, where I’m covering in detail exactly how to do that, from start to finish.   It’s FREE and you can sign up at http://kimberlyenglot.com/hhteleseminar. About the Author: Kimberly Englot teaches success-driven women how to create the life vision they crave, have the courage to pursue it and live it from a purely authentic place so they can enjoy all the happiness, freedom and success they deserve. Kimberly is the founder of the Center of Authentic Self Development.
