Transcend 5….. Life –what a delusion

It is said that we are lucky to be born as a human being, being the only living creature to enjoy the natural environment around us. But what we notice is that most of us, whether rich or poor, are unhappy, with a constant feeling of inadequacy in our lives, unfulfilled and not knowing, as to why we are not content and happy in just the way we are.

In Hindu philosophy, this is referred to as Maya, meaning delusion. It is said that until and unless you do not achieve victory over yourself, whatever one may do he will always remain inadequate, with sorrow & fear.

For progress in life, I once heard someone saying that you should be satisfied by being unsatisfied, but the whole process always remains a delusion, because, this search for unending desire and ambition, keeps us in the vicious cycle of relativity, where we are in a constant flux of momentary periods of happiness and sadness, may have all the comforts, but the discomfort still remains in some way or the other. Most of us in fact enjoy this dichotomy of life, as long as the materialistic comforts remain. I am one such example, but the aspiration to get out of this delusion is always there.

The reason, we have an unpredictable mind, a mind which is constantly changing with thoughts, emotion and action leading to unending problems, even if all wants are fulfilled, the conflicts remain wondering what to do next. This is all because of the gift to human in having choice to do every single act. Choice creates conflicts. Animals do not have a mind to choose, it merely enacts though instinct, whereas Man has the intellect in order to choose and judge, to be proactive or reactive in whatever he chooses. Unfortunately, with this desire of always wanting and choosing, makes him inadequate in life living in constant conflicts of right and wrong, always seeking happiness but never complete. Everyone is wants to acquire or get rid of something, as values go on changing, as what was desirable once may not be so now. So, there may be, conflicts between your values and your wants, between practicality and your emotions, between want and renounce, between what I should do and not do, creating conflicts in our mind that we may want to get out and achieve peace. The desire for more is comparative because there always will be more of whatever one has, so one has to eventually decide how to become adequate or to feel at peace with oneself. Neither wanting or giving up is going to solve the inner conflicts, because the ones who have and those who do not have are both unhappy, this is the delusion of life that we live in.

Now the answer to this is equally complex. Philosophically, it is explained, that in order to have peace and tranquility within, one has to perform his actions with an attitude of offering and also expect results with an attitude of acceptance, without any reaction to them. To, further elaborate, in action we have control due to choice, in results, there is no choice so no control, whereas in reaction to your respective action, you can practice control, in your likes and your dislike This will results in removing want and more, bringing in compassion, making us selfless and thereby removing delusions of life.

There are certain practices which we may follow that can gradually take us in our journey of life away from this roller coaster of choices and conflicts, where we feel more at peace and relaxed. First, we can start by being more observant on what choices we make, they should be on the positive side then, bring in compassion into our life, loving not only our nears and dears, but emitting love all around us, from here we move onto practicing the art of giving rather than always be concerned about what is it for us. After this comes truth, as to how important it is to be first true to ourselves that is by not having to add but, to whenever we are cornered and of course also trying to make truth as a habit. Then we have to have faith within us and make that stronger, since without faith, life seems to be hollow when we are constantly doubting and suspecting, thereby aggravating the conflicts in our lives. Now, comes the most difficult that is to practice detachment, meaning removing I, me and mine in everything, since the root cause of all our conflicts arises from our attachments to all what we possess and wish to possess, so if we can mature and try to balance our attachments by reducing them, we enter into a new world altogether. The last is to have control over fear, less the attachments, less is the fear, and fear is also the most negative, having the power to destroy you completely. That is why the saying; fearlessness is godliness.

Higher the degree, in following the above seven habits that is positivity, giving, love, truth, faith, detachment and fearlessness, stronger are the chances of perfection, or at least being aware of them, in order to follow them anytime in life along with the path of desire and comforts, that we all have chosen in this delusionary life.

There is another way of how we can understand this delusion in our lives. We all live in an unconscious state of mind, through our dreams, fears, choices, comparisons and compulsions. It is said that there are three levels of Reality. First is illusory reality, where the real is in fact unreal, but it is just through our own conviction that we are convinced that it is real. Second is relative reality, in which the whole universe exists, where the reality is apparent, but not real, meaning happiness is related to sadness, or good to bad, truth to lie, and god to devil etc., “Nothing is good or bad until it’s related to something of meaning to you, this way in order for us to live in harmony, everything has to be compared and evaluated to its opposites, say in order to understand or evaluate hot we have to know about cold. So, the same way what is good to me, may not be good to another person, so good becomes relative and apparent, that is, it seems real but it is not. This is what leads to all conflicts and delusions in our lives, where we are living in relative reality which is constantly changing and bringing bouts of happiness and sadness in our lives. The third is Absolute reality, which can only exist in the present form, without any linkage or comparisons to anything in the past or future, in pure consciousness and awareness.

So, if we start trying to live in the present moment, cutting off thoughts of the past and future, as and when it comes in the form of emotions, and not planning, being in now, in all creativity, rather than comparing and evaluating, not linking to our attachments and fears, we start entering into the zone of absolute reality. In Hinduism, it is referred to as Satchitanand, meaning to exist (sat) in consciousness (chit) is bliss(anand)
